About the Project

Upper Tamor Hydropower Project (UTHPP) is a Peaking Run-of-River (PRoR) project located in Phaktanglung Rural Municipality and Phungling Municipality (formerly Tapethok VDC and Linkhim VDC) in Taplejung District, Koshi Province, Nepal.
The headworks and powerhouse area of the project is located in Phaktanglung Rural Municipality (formerly Tapethok VDC), and the tailrace tunnel is located in Phungling Municipality (formerly Linkhim VDC) of Taplejung District, Koshi Province. The licensed boundary of the project area extends between longitudes of 87° 41’ 40” to 87° 48’ 03” E and latitudes of 27° 25’ 19” to 27°30’45” N. Tamor Energy Pvt. Ltd. (TE) is the Owner of the project.

the project has been designed considering design discharge of 68.64m3/s (45 % exceedance flow in connection agreement) with a gross head of 450m (from headpond maximum operating level to turbine axis). The licensed capacity of the project has been set as 285 MW. However, to comply with the prerequisites of NEA of signing PPA and current national and international market rates, the installed capacity has been set as 255.28MW. The project is of Peaking Run of River Scheme with a 6-hour peaking facility, 4-hour peaking facility provided in Headpond and 2-hour peaking facility provided in Barrage and Weir.

Project Accesibility

The project is located in Taplejung district. The project site is accessible from Phungling, the district headquarters of Taplejung. Phungling can be accessed by multiple routes which are described here forth.

Option I: Phungling is accessible through black topped road of about 683km from Kathmandu via Bardibas – Charali – Illam and Panchthar.

Option II: Phungling Bazaar from Kathmandu can be made through via flight from Tribhuwan International Airport to Suketar Airport. There is a 9km long black topped road connecting Suketar and Phungling.

Option III: Kathmandu – Bhadrapur air flight (Tribhuwan International Airport to Chandragadi Airport) followed by approx. 238km (Charali – Illam – Panchthar) black topped road.

Both the headworks and powerhouse sites are fully accessible from Phungling Bazaar via earthen roads.

One option to reach the project area is via road connecting Middle Tamor Hydropower Project and Phungling Bazaar along the Tamor corridor i.e., Phungling- Thumba (MTHPP Powerhouse site)- Mitlung- Sisne (UTHPP Powerhouse area)- Siwa- Chhiruwa and Tapethok (UTHP Headworks area).

Another option is accessing the site through earthen road via Phungling- Gaigade- Hangdewa Khola-Mitlung- Sisne (Powerhouse area)- Siwa- Chhiruwa and Tapethok (Headworks area) bypassing the Middle Tamor Powerhouse.

The project will require one time upgradation of 14 km long permanent road from the headworks of MTHPP to UTHPP. In addition, the project has to construct additional 8.3 km of new road and two bridges to connect the surge-shaft, adit tunnel, muck disposal sites and other work fronts.
